Know Your Target Audience

July 5, 2018 By Connie Ragen Green

When you know your target audience for your book, you are several steps ahead of your competition. This includes authors who have been publishing books on your topic for years, as well as companies who wish to grab a piece of the market share for your book’s topic.

Know Who Your Audience Is…

Let’s backtrack a little after discussing writing and planning your book for so long. Before you do anything else, please understand how important it is that you know who your audience is. When marketing, it’s imperative that you know exactly who you want to attract with all of your efforts.

  • Who are they? How do these people identify when it comes to career, interests, and more? Knowing this will help you make a connection with them in the future.
  • What do they value? This is something very personal, but people let us know what they value with everything they say or do.
  • What are their desires?
  • What are their fears?
  • How old are they? This one is only relevant in some niches and will not make a difference in most as you get to know your target audience.
  • How do they spend their free time?
  • Where do they “hang out”?

Answering all of these questions and more will go far in helping you know who your audience is so that you can not only create an amazing book for them, but ensure that the right eyes get on it so they can read it. If you don’t know: who the audience is, what they do in their free time, and whether or not they can afford to buy your book, you won’t be able to market it very well.

Know Your Competition

Just like you need to know who your audience is, you need to understand who your competition it is. When you know your competition, a lot of things happen. You figure out what works with their audience and what doesn’t. In addition, you can even partner with them to help promote each other. Authors are usually very accommodating to each other and helpful.

As long as you didn’t write about the same topic, you can work together easily. However, even if you are completely direct competition it’s good to know them. You can follow them on Instagram and use that to find their audience who can also become your audience. That means your competition does a lot of work for you.
